The use of electrolysis in acne treatments - sebaceous gland ablation 

Sebaceous Gland Ablation (SGA) offers a long-term solution to persistent acne. This is an exciting new treatment which is bringing hope to acne sufferers everywhere.

What is acne?

Acne is an unsightly skin condition which causes thickening and inflammation of the skin tissues, along with comedones, milia, pustules and sebaceous cysts. For the vast majority of people, it occurs generally in puberty, and is resolved by adulthood; however, in some cases (20-30%) it can persist into middle age. Often, sufferers are left with permanent scarring even after the condition subsides.

Conventional treatment includes the use of oral antibiotics, topical lotions and medicated washes. Particular medications, such as Roaccutane, often cause unpleasant side-effects which can be distressing for the patient.

In many cases, these yield successful results for the duration of treatment, but patients often suffer relapse upon cessation. As yet, they can only offer a temporary solution to a long-term problem.

What is SGA?

Sebaceous gland ablation is the selective destruction of the hyperactive sebaceous gland by a high frequency current (thermolysis). This treatment instantly eases the sensation of pressure and pain experienced by the patient suffering with severe cystic acne; without the side-effects of scarring. It typically leads to visible improvement and reduction of lesions within two to three days of treatment, as opposed to the several weeks that untreated lesions can take to heal on their own.

Today, SGA is in its infancy in the UK, but is well established in both Australia and the USA as an effective solution for long-term acne management.

How is it carried out?

The procedure for sebaceous gland ablation is relatively straightforward. Clients should be given a full consultation with medical history investigation, and a thorough explanation of the treatment. The skin should be analysed and prepared with the appropriate antibacterial products. In some cases, topical anaesthesia is used. According to the size of the client’s pore or cyst, an appropriate insulated needle should be selected. The intensity of frequency should be determined by the size of each lesion to be treated. The skin should then be gently stretched, and the needle inserted into the centre of the lesional follicular pore. A high frequency current can then be discharged for a fraction of a second (usually 0.25-0.5 seconds, depending on the equipment being used), until the inflammatory content softens and rises to the skin surface.

At this point, an antiseptic swab is often used to wipe away any discharge, before the electrolysist or dermatologist re-enters the pore and gently stretches it, without using any current. This allows any further sebaceous matter to escape. Should it be required, gentle extraction can then be performed, before the qualified professional re-enters the pore one final time, to discharge one to two bursts of high frequency current, thus drying out the sebaceous gland. Finally, an appropriate soothing antiseptic solution should be applied, and the client should be advised of an at-home skin care routine and precautionary measures.

How successful is it?

Overall, the results from this emerging treatment are promising and most clients show a reduction in acne lesions after one - three treatments.

What are the side-effects?

As the treatment is non systemic, it is highly unlikely to cause side-effects. However, due to the nature of the treatment, some transient erythema should be expected. It is also possible that when the inflammatory content is released from lesions, it can spread to surrounding tissues, causing further inflammation.  Crucially, the procedure is non-damaging to the skin tissues and as such, scarring and pigment alterations are highly unlikely when performed by a professionally trained dermatologist or electrolysist, assuming appropriate aftercare is pro-actively followed by the client.

Radio frequency is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment and is used to gently tighten and firm sagging skin.  It is like Laser and LED treatments in that it uses energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production but the heat energy is electrical rather than light based. Radiofrequency heats the dermis and tightens the skin without damaging the epidermis (top layer) of the skin.
Radiofrequency is especially suitable for targeting loose skin around the neck and chin and wrinkles or lines that develope between the nose and the mouth, but it can also be used for stretch marks on the tummy and thighs.
Radiofrequency treatment takes anywhere between 20 and 45 minutes and there’s very little downtime - you’re likely to experience a bit of redness for up to 24 hours afterwards.
During the treatment a machine will heat skin to a bearable 38-40 degrees.
Like most things in this life, radiofrequency is not a miraculous cure-all and it takes time to work. Both men and women can take advantage of this deep cleansing facial, which incorporates deep cleansing, thorough facial pore extractions (removal of blackheads, whiteheads, etc).
This type of acne creates relatively small black or white bumps on the face. Whiteheads look like they contain a tiny bit of pus, though this is mostly dead skin cells. Although they are still visible, they are called closed comedones because they have a little bit of skin over the top of them. The main difference between a white and a blackhead is that blackheads don’t have this skin closing. This means material in them oxidizes from contact with the air, and turn black or dark brown.
The substance in a comedone, white or black, is really the same, and the two types form in a near identical way. Both are caused when follicles in the skin become blocked, usually by sebum, an oil produced by the sebaceous glands. As follicles get blocked, they widen and collect dead skin cells and a small amount of bacteria. Comedones can be very small, and merely look like a bump, but some get larger and more obvious when the follicle remains blocked. People may have a variety of comedone sizes, especially on their faces and especially if they are teens when sebum production is highest. Many older people also have this problem and if it goes untreated it continues to worsen.

 A simple pore cleansing can help to alleviate or lessen this skin problem. As a courtesy, Diane can split the time of your electrolysis treatment between electrolysis and pore cleansing rather than separating it into two separate treatments which would be more economical for you.

Once the skin is cleared, pore cleansing is only necessary 2-4 times a year and that will usually minimize the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne if a home regimen is followed also - (but each individual is different).

We will be able to recommend the most suitable shade, while taking your own preferences into account. If you want to achieve as natural a look as possible, you are advised to only ever lighten or darken your eyebrows by one or two shades. 

You will need to pop into The Beauty Room Yeovil prior to your appointment in order to have a patch test.  This must be at least 24 hours prior to the treatment.  This helps to ensure that you will not have an allergic reaction to the tint itself.

After your appointment it is likely that the tint will stain the skin between the brow hairs initially, making them appear darker in the first day or so than they really are. Don't panic if your brows look strange to you at first - the difference is bound to feel a little odd initially but you'll soon get used to it. 

Eyebrow tint is described as semi-permanent dye not because the colour fades, but because eyebrow hairs have a very short growth cycle. Eyebrow hairs tend to fall out within 6-8 weeks, taking the tint with them.

Why would I want to tint my eyebrows?

Eyebrow tinting is a great option in the following circumstances:

1. You have radically changed your hair colour

For very dark haired people who dye their hair a much lighter colour, dark eyebrows can be a dead giveaway. In this situation, tinting the eyebrows one or two shades lighter is an easy and effective way to make the change look more natural. Similarly, blondes and redheads who wish to dye their hair dark may also consider tinting their eyebrows to match. However, you should remember that your eyebrows don't necessarily have to match your hair colour precisely. You are generally advised to keep your eyebrows one or two shades lighter or darker than your hair colour.

2. You have noticed grey hairs in your eyebrows

Greying hair is a natural part of getting older. Whereas some people choose to let nature take its course, others prefer to conceal it. Although plucking the odd stray hair from the scalp is fine, plucking hairs from the relatively sparse eyebrow area is likely to produce unsightly bald patches and leave the brow looking misshapen. For this reason, you are advised to avoid the tweezers and opt instead for an eyebrow tint, which simply dyes the grey to match the surrounding hairs. 

3. You want thicker looking eyebrows

Pale, translucent hairs can make the eyebrows look thin and straggly. Tinting these hairs could reveal a neat, shapely brow you never even knew was there. Even though the thickness and denseness of your eyebrow hair can of course not be changed in the tinting session alone, the darker colour will make them appear naturally thicker.

Before you attend your eyelash tinting appointment, you must first have a patch test at  The Beauty Room Yeovil to test your body's reaction to the dye. Although the eyelash tint itself is permanent, the effects will only last as long as the growth cycle of your eyelashes. As each dyed lash reaches the end of its growth cycle it will fall out and cause the darker look of your lashes to gradually fade over time.

Your eyelash tint will last around 4-6 weeks, depending on the growth cycle of your lashes and during this time it should not be necessary to wear mascara.

Does IPL Laser Treatment hurt?
Generally no, people describe the feeling as a ‘zap’ or ‘ping’ like an eleastic band, but due to the cooled head system, there is little or no pain felt.
What happens immediately after my hair removal treatment?
Hair appears to still be growing, but are in fact detached from the follicle, gentle exfoliation removes these, and there is no future hair growth from these follicles* (*apart from clients experiencing hormone conditions)’.
Does IPL Laser Treatment have any after-effects?
The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and raised but this usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

TCA Peels
A trichloroacetic acid peel, or TCA peel, is a type of cosmetic chemical peel performed to treat a wide range of skin problems, such as visible signs of aging, sun damage, acne scarring, and hyperpigmentation. 

What Is A TCA Peel?
The primary ingredient in a TCA chemical peel is trichloroacetic acid, a derivative of vinegar, and it exists in concentrations of 15–70%. These peels can be applied in a variety of strengths (from light to medium) and may be customized by the use of pre-treatment agents prior to treatment as well as the number of layers applied during treatment. TCA peels are applied to remove the uppermost layer of skin (epidermis) from the face, neck, hands, and other parts of the body. TCA peels use chemical exfoliation to remove dead skin cells from the treatment area, reducing the appearance and visibility of acne scars, sun damage, melasma, and hyperpigmentation while exposing a brand-new, unblemished layer of skin underneath.

How Many TCA Peels Do I Need To See Results?

Improvements to the skin following a TCA peel will be visible after one peel. However, patients with greater degrees of damage, such as those with severe scarring, hyperpigmentation, or sun damage typically require a series of peels in order to obtain clear skin. Following your initial treatment, additional TCA peels may be scheduled for a few weeks or months after the first procedure. The number of peels required depends on multiple factors, such as your skin’s reaction to the procedure as well as the type and severity of damage on your skin. 

What To Expect During A TCA Peel

While the TCA peel procedure is generally quite fast, this treatment generally requires more than one appointment. Those who regularly use retinoid creams or medications will be asked to discontinue their use, as they may cause the TCA to penetrate too deeply into the skin. A week before treatment, patients must stop using hair removal products, exfoliants. and skin-lightening medications on and around the intended treatment area.

During a TCA procedure, the peel is applied with a gauze or cotton-tipped applicator to the treatment area. The skin may begin to whiten, causing a slight burning sensation. After approximately 5 minutes, additional layers may be applied in order to increase the depth of the treatment. Once the desired number of layers have been applied, the TCA is removed from the skin and a cool compress is applied for several minutes.

TCA Peels Aftercare
Use only mild skin cleansers and other skin care products and meticulously use broad-spectrum sun protection with a high SPF throughout the recovery period. Avoid picking and peeling the skin, as it may lead to scarring. Until the skin is fully healed, avoid using products containing vitamin C as well as retinoids and other exfoliation products.

Eyelash tint is a form of hair dye developed for specific use on the eyelashes. Eyelash tinting produces a similar effect to mascara. It visibly lengthens, darkens and thickens the appearance of eyelashes without smudging, clotting or rubbing off. 

Whether you're going on a beach holiday and want to enjoy swimming and water-sports without worrying about panda eyes, or if you're simply curious to see the enhancing effects of darker lashes, then eyelash tinting could be the beauty treatment for you.

Before you attend your eyelash tinting appointment, you must first have a patch test at The Beauty Room Yeovil to test your body's reaction to the dye. A patch test involves applying a small amount of the tint to your inner arm. This way, if you do have an allergic reaction, it should be small, controlled and well away from your vulnerable eye area. The tinting patch test needs to be carried out at least 24 hours before your actual appointment to allow time for any delayed reactions.

At your tinting appointment we will discuss the look you want and what colour dyes would suit your complexion most, whether blue-black, brown-black, or grey. 

Although the eyelash tint itself is permanent, the effects will only last as long as the growth cycle of your eyelashes. As each dyed lash reaches the end of its growth cycle it will fall out and cause the darker look of your lashes to gradually fade over time.

Your eyelash tint will last around 4-6 weeks, depending on the growth cycle of your lashes and during this time it should not be necessary to wear mascara.

Full set of Acrylic extensions with gel or varnish colour.

A tip is applied to the free edge of your natural nail to add length. Acrylic is then laid over the top of your nail and the tip to secure the extension and add strength.

Gel or nail varnish can be applied over the top of this.

The end result is beautiful nails which should last for 2-3 weeks depending on how well you protect them and look after them.

After that you can opt to have them removed or infilled as they will grow out with the natural nail.

The products we use are top quality products which will not damage your nails in the same way that other products may do - we only file your nail plate to take the shine off it for the product to adhere and we use an acid free primer, so you won't end up with paper thin and damaged nails.

Extensions are great if you are going away on holiday or you have a special event to go to as they are long lasting and hard wearing.

How to look after your extensions:

After 2-3 weeks you will need to get your nails infilled (or rebalanced). You should also be practicing good extension care at home. You do not want to use your nails as a tool, don’t open bottles, screw nails, pick off stickers, or open letters with your perfect, new nails. If you’ve had shorter nails in the past it may be second nature to rip something open with your nails. Don’t test the strength of your extension by attempting to open something, they will break and they will need to be redone.

Stay away from water if you can. When cleaning and doing dishes wear some rubber gloves. Also use gloves when working with any cleaning products. You don’t want chemical to be absorbed by your natural nail or the extension. If the chemical weakens the bond of the extension it will lift and cause problems. Keeping your nails properly nourished with cuticle oil is a good ideal to keep nails in top form. Cuticle oil can prevent nails from becoming brittle and cracking. Put it on 2-3 times a day.

How to Identify Red Vein Condition?
